“The Bowral Blacks will be undertaking a fund raising day for the Queensland town of Condamine the first Saturday in March according to Bowral Blacks President Rob Taylor following last Monday’s BRU Committee meeting.

Mr Taylor said that the selection of Condamine came through a request from Blacks past President Tony Fountain who was the co-founder in the mid 1980’s of the Chinchilla River Rats Rugby Club which has now morphed into the Condamine Cods Rugby Club.

Another local connection here is that stock agent Ben Hindmarsh, son of former Wallaby Jim Hindmarsh, when based in nearby Miles, coached the Cods for two seasons.

Mr Taylor said that the appeal would be kicked off with a $500 donation from Tony Fountain and his Ray White Bowral/Ray White Rural Southern Highlands franchises and the chosen day, Saturday 5th March, is when Bowral are playing St Ives for the Waratah Steel Cup.

He said that the day would have a number of fundraising activities including an auction and all funds raised would be sent to the Condamine Cods for them to distribute as they see fit amongst those needing help in Condamine.

He added that through this connection, it is now hoped that from 2012 the Condamine Cods will be able to play against Albury,Bowral and Grenfell each year on a rotating basis for the Fountain Cup. This years fixture is to be conducted at Grenfell on the 12th March.

People wishing to donate prior to that day are asked to call at Ray White Bowral’s office where an official receipt will be given.

Mr Taylor said he felt this was a very positive way for the people of the Highlands to show support for a small Queensland community and he hoped that as many as possible will come to the Condamine Fund Raiser Day and along with raising much needed funds for that town, they would be entertained with some great rugby.

He said that this year the Blacks would be fielding firsts, seconds, thirds and Colts and a great season was being looked forward to.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT ROBERT TAYLOR (0418 968 466) OR TONY FOUNTAIN (0418 238 341)

The day was most successful with Ray White Rural coming from an 18 -14 deficit to run-out winners 24 – 18. The game was played in high spirits on the Greenvale oval, which is only just softer than concrete.

The Ray White spokesman, Kevin Currie said “it was a great day for Greenvale, with a visit to the school by two Cowboy Staffers, Peter Jones and Happy Thompson. An auction of goods and services donated by various businesses raising $8,000, the bulk of which will be used to help fund a week long camp to “Distance Education” primary school kids where they will have the opportunity to receive training in various sports”.

The hero in our story today is a one Jack Clanchy. It involves a flat tyre and some cattle. Here’s the story in his words:

It was about 5 or 6 years ago one night fairly late out near Camooweal and I was travelling west to do a cattle delivery in The Northern Territory where we were going to do a daylight start so my plan was to get as far as I could then find a warm ridge to roll out my swag and grab a few hours camp. Having been going pretty hard all day I was looking forward to a couple of stubbies, a bit of a bogie in a trough then a good solid sleep to re-gather some energy.

In the headlights I saw a bloke pulled off the side of the road about to do battle with a flat tyre and with the knowledge that some times not everything goes to plan with changing tyres in the night, i.e no torch, wrong wheel brace, flat spare and so it goes on, that I stopped and offered to help. Nothing out of the ordinary really as I nearly always pull up to see if a stranded motorist needs a hand, not that I am mechanically minded but just the re-assurance that you are not alone is comforting if you are in need of help. Any way this bloke turned out to be a real decent man and we got to fixing the wheel and talking about the industry and cattle in general and me having a few cold stubbies and over a hour or so had passed and I said that I had a few miles to go before I could turn in for the night and so we shook hands and as I was leaving he said “ you have been a good help to me, I’ll remember this”.

Through mates being in touch and one thing and another I get a phone call the other day asking if I would like to have a look at some of his bullocks and give him an idea as to what they were worth. Sure enough out I go and get talking and offer my services and organize a few cattle trucks and next thing we stand up and sell 532 Brahman Bullocks in the Roma fat sale.

The cattle drafted up very well and presented accordingly and though the market was a bit tough the job was done smoothly, professionally and rounded off with a hand shake and “ I’ll see you again, and thanks for your help”.

Score, Ray White 12 Elders 6 – Football enthusiasts from Clermont to Georgetown gathered in Greenvale last week for the SU Queensland / Stock Up for Hope Football match and Charity Dinner. Former North Queensland Cowboys coach Graham Murray travelled from Townsville to provide pre-match coaching to a crowd of real ‘cowboys’ while NRL referee and SU Qld CEO Tim Mander refereed a nail biting game between Kevin Currie’s ‘Ray White Rural’ team and the ‘Elders Rural Services’ team.

Players turned out on the hard, scorched field in akubra hats, jeans, elastic side boots and even bare feet, treating the star Coach and Referee to the ‘genuine Outback article’ from start to gruelling finish. In the end the Ray White boys came up winners and the two physically shattered teams celebrated or commiserated at the Charity Dinner at Greenvale’s iconic Three Rivers Hotel.

The charity auction was another event highlight where, in scenes resembling a cattle sale, agents from Ray White Rural, Elders Rural Services and Queensland Rural lined up together to raise almost $9000 in less than an hour. The enthusiastic crowd of locals and sponsors were spurred on by even more enthusiastic auctioneers as they kept the bidding going on everything from potted Christmas trees to tonnes of stock feed.

SU Qld District Coordinator Min Jones said that she was overwhelmed by the generosity of sponsors and the success of the charity auction.

“The majority of the funds raised will go directly back into the local community to assist the Greenvale, Mount Surprise and Forsyth State Schools’ Chaplaincy Service and the upcoming SU Qld camp at Mt Surprise” she said.

“It was great to see so many supporters at the event considering that many of them, including Tim Mander and major sponsor George Booth, had to travel several hours to be here and then drive back to Townsville straight after the Dinner to catch a flight, this sort of support and enthusiasm has certainly encouraged us to consider making it an annual event”.

Team sponsor Kevin Currie of Ray White Rural Townsville said that he hoped for a whole weekend of country football next year.

“I believe we could eventually have teams from right across the region turning up to play for a good cause” he said.

Stock Up for Hope exists to see young people in the bush supported through school chaplaincy. It is a unique initiative of SU Qld, the fastest growing youth and children’s organisation in Australia. Anyone interested in more information on the event or upcoming camp can call SU Qld NQ District Coordinator Min Jones on 0437040161 or see www.suqld.org.au

On Sunday 1st March after a huge 80 km paddle from Royden Island to Preservation Island, members of the Ray White team joined the the Paddle for Hope charity to raise over $34,000 to raise awareness and funds for Rett Syndrome, caused by mutations in the gene MECP2

The team of 6 ranging from 40 to 65 years, headed by Dan Williams, with back-up crew comprising Iron Man, Guy Andrews commenced the 368km trip from Welshpool and began a series of island hops with the longest paddle being approx. 70 kms.

On February 23rd, after almost a year of training, a flotilla of kayaks departed the safe haven of Victoria’s south coast and headed out into the dangerous waters of Bass Strait en route to Tasmania. Crossing Bass Strait is widely regarded as one of the greatest challenges in sea kayaking in Australian Waters.

The team made an island landfall each evening in a south east direction; travelling via Flinders Island to Little Mussell-Roe Bay on the north east coast of Tasmania. Skirts, the kayak version, are used to prevent water entering the kayak.

Team member Paul White, Joint Chairman of Ray White Real Estate, dedicated the paddle to raise awareness and funds for Rett Syndrome, caused by mutations in the gene MECP2. Paul’s much loved granddaughter, Abbey, suffers from Rett; a unique development disorder which begins in early infancy and seen almost exclusively in girls.

A child with Rett is usually born healthy with an early period of normal development followed by a slowing down or stagnation of skills. Abbey (4 yrs) cannot talk and walks with great difficulty, and requires assistance for even the simplest of day-to-day activities such as feeding, dressing and toileting.

There is no known cure for Rett Syndrome, however, researches have been able to totally reverse the syndrome in mice and there is great hope that this will one day be replicated in humans.

Donations to the Rett Society were made by pledging an amount per kilometre covered or a total amount and were also conducted directly to the Rett Society at rettsyndromeaust.org.au.
