St George was discovered in 1846 by Sir Thomas Mitchell when he and his party reached the area on his 4th expedition into the interior of Australia. The 4th expedition was in search of a route from Sydney to the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The Balonne Shire has a predominately rural based economy and this has been created and is supported by the towns of St George, Dirranbandi, Bollon, Thallon, Mungindi and Hebel.

Diverse agricultural productioin provides changing landscapes throughout the Shire. The area has properties with sheep; cattle and goats. Farming in the area produces grapes, rockmelons, peanuts, barley, wheat, cotton and soybeans

Cotton is the main irrigated crop of the region and was first grown on a commercial bais in 1957. Due to the hot dry growing season, cotton from the St George area is often known to be some of the best quality in the world. The area is capable of cotton plantings in excess of 50,000 hectares.
